Two Independent Candidates for Allegheny County Council, Carl Redwood and Sam Schmidt Announce Mutual Endorsement and Partnership
The two — both endorsed by Pittsburgh DSA — are teaming up as Independents for Collective Power
On Thursday, Sam Schmidt and Carl Redwood, Independent candidates for Allegheny County Council — District 13 and District 10, respectively — announced that they are endorsing each other and will be partnering in their campaigns for a shared vision of putting people over profits in Allegheny County.
Both endorsed by Pittsburgh Democratic Socialists of America, Sam and Carl are running for, funded by, and fighting for power to the poor and working class.
They are united in their belief that capitalism is the problem, and socialism the solution. They believe the crises Allegheny County faces – housing, food access, union busting, pollution, and climate change — are caused by a system where our right to basic needs for survival is violated if we can’t afford them — and where our County prioritizes those who run corporations, or profit from them.
“As we join County Council, we will continue to advance an agenda to change our County for the better as we advocate and fight for reprioritizing our government around socialist principles,” says Redwood of what he sees as the outcome of he and Schmidt working together during both of their candidacies.
“As I announce my collaboration with Carl Redwood, a stalwart advocate for social justice and fellow Independent Socialist on the ballot, I’m proud to continue and join in his ingenuity by partnering in a collective movement to transform the way we govern and the way we meet the needs of our communities. I am honored to share this moment with such a proven, insightful community leader,” says Schmidt.
The campaigns present an incredible opportunity in county politics to take a big step toward putting people over profits, and continuing to center the communities they both serve, daily.
In addition to sharing a vision for the future of Allegheny County, Sam Schmidt and Carl Redwood also share the challenge of needing to get the word out to voters in neighboring communities that they will have the option to vote for Independent candidates in the November 7th Election. They’ll be working together to share resources and get out the word about these Independents for Collective Power, beginning with joint fundraising efforts as well as a joint canvass launch on Sunday, September 17th, at 2PM from Bloomfield Park right on the border between the two districts, where supporters from the two campaigns will gather prior to splitting up to canvass in either district.
Allegheny County deserves leadership that will fight with them for collective power and greater equity in our county. Carl Redwood and Sam Schmidt are those leaders.
